Fire officials inform the New York Times that lithium-ion batteries caused 188 fires in a recent year in New York City. These fires killed six people, and a fire in Manhattan started by an e-bike battery resulted in 40 injuries.

Lithium-ion batteries contain highly flammable liquid electrolytes. When a battery short-circuits or overheats, it may cause chemicals to boil inside the battery. This creates a noxious gas that makes the battery swell and break open due to a process called thermal runaway.
